Scoring System

Every product is evaluated across five equally weighted criteria, each scored from 1 to 10. The final score is the average of all five, rounded to one decimal place.

What the Scores Mean

  • 9.0 – 10: Exceptional. Best-in-class product with minimal flaws.
  • 8.0 – 8.9: Great. Highly recommended with minor shortcomings.
  • 7.0 – 7.9: Good. Solid product but notable compromises exist.
  • 6.0 – 6.9: Average. Gets the job done but better options are available.
  • Below 6.0: Not recommended. Significant issues that outweigh the positives.

Testing Process

Every product follows the same structured evaluation pipeline, regardless of category or price point.

Phase 1: Unboxing & First Impressions

We document packaging, included accessories, build quality, and initial setup experience. First impressions are noted but never influence the final score.

Phase 2: Two-Week Daily Use

The product becomes part of our daily routine. We use it as a real consumer would — no lab-only testing. Notes are taken daily on comfort, reliability, and usability.

Phase 3: Benchmark & Measurement

Standardized benchmarks and calibrated measurement tools are used to quantify performance. Audio products get frequency response tests; laptops get thermal and battery rundowns.

Phase 4: Competitive Comparison

We compare the product side-by-side with at least two direct competitors in the same price range. Value is always assessed relative to the market.

Phase 5: Final Verdict

Scores are assigned across all five criteria. The review is written, internally reviewed for accuracy, and published with full disclosure of how the product was obtained.

Our Independence Pledge

The Verdict Lab is editorially independent. Here's what that means in practice:

  • We purchase the majority of our review units with our own funds.
  • When a manufacturer provides a review sample, we always disclose it.
  • No brand has ever paid for a review or influenced a score.
  • We do not accept sponsored reviews or paid placements within editorial content.
  • Affiliate links are used to support the site, but they never affect our recommendations. See our Affiliate Disclosure for details.
  • Our team members are prohibited from holding stock in companies whose products they review.
